On the banks of the Ohio

On the edge of West Virginia
where the Ohio River flows
It’s the place I spent my boyhood
I can’t return I don’t suppose

In my dreams I sometimes go there
and watch the river boats go by
see the billows from the smokestacks
and hear the lonesome whistles cry.

All my loved ones gone before me
rest in the same small plot of land
just a short way from the river
beyond its ever shifting sand.

Where The Rhododendrons Grow

In the rugged Appalachians
a place that’s neither north nor south
is the state called West Virginia
where the Rhododendrons grow.

Just west of the Blue Ridge Mountains
and east of the great Ohio
where my fore fathers lived and died
where the Rhododendrons grow.

A land that’s known much poverty
one I’ll forever call my home
A place that’s always calling me
where the Rhododendrons grow

I’m in love with West Virginia
of its beginnings I am proud
a state that was born in freedom
where the Rhododendrons grow.
